Abstract (EN)
Purpose: Night eating syndrome (NES) is an eating disorder with daytime anorexia, evening hyperphagia and insomnia. The aim of our study is to determine night eating and sleep levels in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and its association with anthropometric measurements such as BMI and waist circumference. Method: Our study was conducted with 120 individuals with type 2 diabetes between the ages of 18-65 who visited Çekmeköy District Health Directorate-Health Life Center to receive healthy nutrition and weight loss services. Night Eating Questionnaire (NEQ) was applied to determine the presence of NES, and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was applied by face-to-face interview to determine sleep quality. Results: As result of our study, NES was observed in 20.8% (25 people) of the participants. Although NEQ scores were significantly higher in women than in men, no significant correlation was made with the presence of NES and gender. NES was not found to be associated with age, HbA1c, educational status, type 2 diabetes duration, smoking, alcohol use or physical activity. Body weight, BMI, waist circumference, and hip circumference were significantly higher in individuals with night eating. The sleep quality of 30% (36 people) of the participants was found to be good, while 70% (84 people) was found to have poor sleep quality. Women's sleep quality survey scores are significantly higher. However, sleep quality does not vary depending on gender. Although the waist circumference, hip circumference and BMI of individuals with poor sleep quality were higher, no significant difference was observed. A significant relation was found between the presence of NES and sleep quality in individuals with type 2 diabetes. Individuals with poor sleep quality are significantly more likely to have NES. Conclusion: As a result of our study, although NES and sleep quality were found to be related in individuals with type 2 diabetes, no correlation could be made with HbA1c in both evaluations. When evaluating individuals with type 2 diabetes, treatment can be more effective if their sleep quality, eating hours and night eating are evaluated. More studies on this subject can be conducted to examine NES and sleep quality in individuals with type 2 diabetes.
