Abstract (EN)
ABSTRACTThis study was planned to evaluate effects of supervised exercise programconsisted of aerobic and resistance exercises on metabolic control, depressionand quality of life in patients with Type II diyabet. 36 patients with Type IIdiyabet which were followed Sogutozu Bayindir Hospital Department ofEndocrinology, were recruited to study. The patients were randomly assigned toexercise or control groups. Standart treatment (diet, medical treatment, exercisesuggestion) was continued in the control group. In the study group, an exerciseprogram consisted of resistance exercises, calisthenic exercises and walking,was performed under physical therapist supervision for eight weeks, in additionto standart treatment. Before and after the study, fasting blood glucose, HbA1c,total, HDL, LDL cholesterol and triglyceride values were measured. Short Form-36 (SF-36) quality of life questionnaire and Center for Epidemiological StudiesDepression Scale (CES-D) was used to evaluate quality of life and depression.No difference was observed between before and after study levels of HbA1c,fasting blood glucose, total, HDL, LDL cholesterol and triglyceride in the controlgroup. In the exercise group, LDL cholesterol did not change; while decrease inHbA1c, fasting blood glucose, total cholesterol, triglyceride levels and increasein HDL cholesterol were significant. Improvements in all subscales of quality oflife except of social function and depression were also significant. No significantchange was found in quality of life and depression in control group. As aconclusion, supervised exercise program which included resistance exercises,calisthenic exercises and walking improved metabolic control, quality of life anddepression in patients with Type II diyabet.Key Words: Diabetes Mellitus, calisthenic exercises, walking, glycemic control,health outcomes
