The effect of the sleep quality and fatigue levels on the quality of life in patients with Type II Diabetes

The aim of this study was to determine the sleep quality and fatigue on the quality of life in patients with type 2 diabetes.This cross-sectional and analytical study was carried out at Bolu İzzet Baysal State Hospital Diabetes Education and Follow-up Clinic between January and June, 2010.The universe of this study was 887 diabetic patients and, sample of study was composed of 120 patients with type 2 diabetes. Data were colloected by using a questionnaire form to determine the sociodemographic and ilness-related characterisitcs, ?Visual Analogue Scale for Fatigue?, The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index? and ?Ferrans and Powers Quality of Life Scale Diabetes Version?. Descriptive statistics, Chi-Square Test, Kolmogorov-Smirnov Test, One Way Anova Test, Kruskall Wallis Test, Mann-Whitney U Test, Pearson Correlation Coefficient were used to analyze the data.The patients with diabetes were 65.8% female and, the mean age of was 53.37±7.93 years. The patients? mean HbA1c level was 7.74±1.65, the mean fatigue score was 5.56±1.56 and, the mean energy score was 4.71±1.34. In this study, women?s fatigue score were higher than men, sleep and quality of life was lower found. Sleep quality and quality of life was significantly affected by Body Mass Index (p<0.05). HbA1c levels greater than 7% in those the quality of life was found lower. The result of study showed that diabetic complications were associated with reduced sleep quality in patients with type 2 diabetes and, in those the dimensions quality of life scores were significantly found lower (p<0.05).It was found that patients with type 2 diabetes with sleep quality and fatigue level has significant relationship between quality of life.
