Review of typographic stamp designs and the 100th year of the Republic typographic stamp design

Typography, the most impressive factor of graphic design, has been an important source of inspiration for the designer in many visual communication works. Typography, which was first used by Johannes Gutenberg to define metal letters, adds an artistic meaning to the writing with the depth it adds. With an increasing momentum from past to present, typography, which is used in many field, is also seen in postage stamps. In the literature review, it was seen that typographic postage stamps were not analyzed. Typography is the most important element in stamp designs, which is one of the graphic design products. In typographic stamp designs, intelligibility and clarity are the basic principles and it is dominant to convey the message and information to the target audience by visualizing information in writing. A literature review was conducted on the research subject and it was seen that typographic postage stamps were not examined. After the data were obtained, the history of stamp design, technical principles, typographic stamps and qualitative analyses of the elements guiding the design in typographic stamp design were carried out and transferred to the study. The republic, which 100th anniversary will be celebrated in 2023, has been discussed in the implementation phase of this thesis. The freedom, independence, flag, principles, power and peace gained by the republic are visually symbolized on typographically designed stamps. The design principles have been meticulously taken into consideration when designing stamps that enable intercultural communication. Verbal messages were conveyed to the audience using typographic elements. In the designs, letters, numbers, words, punctuation marks and texts are brought together by considering color, size, illustration, typefaces, balance, contrast effect, integrity and hierarchy. In this thesis, it is aimed to evaluate typographic postage stamps from a typographic point of view and it is thought that it will make an enlightening contribution to the studies that will specifically design typographic stamps.
