Abstract (EN)
Human beings, since the discovery of writing, need to write down all their knowledge, thoughts, feelings and historical events. In this concept, writing - the second best way to express themselves for human beings after language was hardly done on materials such as stone, the blade bone of the sheep, pots and pans, skin of wild animals, outer covering of a tree, papyrus and parchment previously. With the discovery of paper, the inevitable instinct to write created the books. In time, to pay respect and care them, the written documents were started to be bound to hold the pages together.Societies made great efforts to spread their thoughts and beliefs among the civilizations through books. Since writing books by hand was very hard and required a long time people wanted to protect the work and they also wanted to care its covering to increase the value of the content. Although the reasons for binding the manuscripts are the same for many civilizations and cultures, the techniques and ornaments show differences. The first part of this thesis gives information on the history of bookbinding and the techniques. The second part describes the place of Tire and its vicinity in Turkish cultural life and gives historical and personal information about Tire and Necip Paşa. The third part includes samples, explanations and drawings of the Ottoman bookbindings found in the Library of Necip Paşa and ornamented in yekşah, çarkuşe and zilbahar techniques which form the subject of this thesis. The thesis concludes with the bibliography after the evaluation and conclusion parts.
