Basic principles of quality of health are protecting people from damages and preventing of unnecessary application of health care. Inappropriate antibiotic use is contrary to the safe and effective health care principles. Prophylactic antibiotic use at clean operations like thyroidectomy which is described as first class wound by WHO is controversial. Operation site infection can be prevented by following the principles like preoperative operation site sterilization, regular wound care, surgical instrument sterilization, shortening of hospitalization, avoiding smoking and etc. Hence side effects related to antibiotics can be prevented and costs related to drug use can be reduced. Prophylactic antibotic use after thyroidectomy operations at İzmir Katip Çelebi University Atatürk Education and Investigation Hospital General Surgery Service was investigated. Scientific proofs about using antibotic prophylaxis must be used only the patients chosen by evaluation of personal risk profile was shared by general surgeons as a presentation. After that presentation propylactic antibiotic use after thyroidectomy operations were reduced 5.7%. In this study it was evaluated that whether prophylactic antibiotic use after thyoidectomy operations is necessary and the role of education. It was decided that regular and continous knowledge synchronization can prevent inappropriate antibotic use.
