An investigation and evaluation on lighting of theatre halls

The objective of lighting design is to generate the conditions suitable to the users' needs. These conditions show different characteristics for the varying users' requirements. In theatres where stage performances are presented, the aim is to satisfy the audience, and let the players to stage a satisfactory performance. The lighting for any one of the two user groups should not effect unfavourable conditions for the other. The aims of the present work are to determine the properties of the stage and parterre lighting arrangements, to mark out the relevant principles, and to show their effects on the spectators and the players in view of these principles. In this context, general principles of lighting schemes for the parterre and stage lighting of halls are cited, and the results of objective and subjective investigations carried out on the parterre and stage lighting schemes of five theatre halls located in Istanbul are given. The work is composed of six chapters. In Chapter 1, the study was introduced, with a literature review, purpose and diagnosis. In Chapter 2, theatre lighting and working method are considered. In Chapter 3, general information about the theatre halls and the plays are given. In Chapter 4, the principles of parterre lighting, and the objective (measurements) and subjective (survey) investigation with evaluations of the results are given. In Chapter 5, the principles of stage lighting, and the objective (measurements) and subjective (survey) investigation with evaluations of the results are given. In Chapter 6 is devoted to a general evaluation, discussion and conclusions.
