The houses of Bey Street in Tokat

Tokat is located in the inner part of the Central Black Sea Region. Although Tokat is rich in traditional Turkish houses, they are researched not enough in terms of art history. Primarily the library work and the research of the houses of Bey Street in person, which consisted of documenting by water-color copy drawings and photographs, have been completed. Subsequently the places of the houses have been determined in the development line of traditional Turkish house architecture by detailed introducing each one of them in systematic catalog order and by comparing and evaluating them each as a separate section.21 houses in Bey Street were analyzed in the context of this work. The houses of Bey Street have preserved the features of the traditional Turkish house upto now. These houses reflect lifestyle, culture and economic status of the people living in Bey Street. In this study, the houses of Bey Street were examined and evaluated. All of the houses in Bey Street were dated mid 19th and beginning 20th centuries.There are two floors in the houses of Bey Street. Ground floor is made of stone and it is used for services functions. The upper floor is used as a main living area and open to Bey Street with different types of projectings. The type of plan with two facades and an inner hall and the type of plan with an outer hall are commonly seen in the houses of Bey Street. Although few in number, examples of the type of plan with one facades and an inner hall and the type of plan with an outer hall are seen. Facades of the houses of Bey Street are quite simple but interior space of the houses is rich in wood and plaster decorations.We believe that our study would contribute in the preservation of these highly important works of art in our cultural history.Key Words1.
