The Importance of 5s in total productive maintenance activities and an application of 5s

Since from the beginning of 90s, the global economic conditions had forcedcompanies for rapid changes in all activities. Quality and productivity had gainedimportance. In this global economy, the survival of companies depends on their abilityto rapidly innovate and improve. To create a dynamic and productive maintenancesystem is one of the precautions, which should be taken in these transformation andimprovement activities.TPM; also called ? Total Productive Management ? in literature aims at machineoperators to handle maintenance activities thus equipment efficiency will increase. TPMfights with 6 big losses which prevents equipment efficiency. TPM aims to reach zerostoppages and then zero defects.5S, ? The first step of TPM ?, is a systematic approach which leads employees to beinvolved in housekeeping activities. 5S which creates a starting point for otherimprovements, has the most priority in all improvements. A working atmosphere wherecleanliness and orderliness are dominant has positive impacts on safety, quality,productivity and moral factors.In this study, TVB and it?s first step 5S are examined in detail and the applicationof 5S in Dönmez Clutch A.Ş. is explained.Key Words: 1) TPM, 2)6 Big Losses, 3) Zero Defects, 4) 5S, 5)Equipment
