Representation of child brides in documentary cinema in the context of social memory

Documentary cinema is the production that witness the every period we live in, strengthen our social memory, reflects the issues with positive or negative aspects and contradictions, makes us aware of the facts behind superficial through its questioning structure. In this way, starting with the claim of reality, reveals a number of sections from the life of people or from the life of nature by taking the real person, the true story and the real space. The memories, pains, joys and events that we carry from the years before, consciously or unconsciously bring the traces of social memory with them. In this study, it is examined how the concept of child bride is handled in documentary cinema and how documentaries contribute to the formation of social memory in this process. Since the study claims to conduct research on a social subject, semiotic analysis was performed to obtain qualitative data as a method. Content analysis was used to obtain sufficient data from the documentary called Zarok that selected as an example. The characters included in the documentaries thought to be analyzed in the study were examined with a sociological perspective and inferences were made about the social position of women. The validity of the hypotheses has been tested by looking for answers to research questions with the data obtained from the documentary. In this context, books, articles, oral history, documentary films and so on. various sources were utilized. Finally, the resulting qualitative data was interpreted in the conclusion part of the study. Key Words: Social Memory, Documentary Cinema, Child Bride, Zarok
