Evaluation of disaster legislation in the context of gender equality and sustainable development process

Nowadays, one of the consequences of loss of life and material losses as a result of natural disasters is that women who make up half of the society suffer more from gender inequalities and social inequalities caused by social roles and responsibilities. The other is the loss of country's sustainable development. Although women are important actors in terms of participation in the labor force, reproductive functions and development of country's economy, they cannot take part in the workforce due to gender inequality and they are also exposed to physical and social vulnerabilities in disasters. International studies and experiences agreed that one of the biggest obstacle to country's development is disasters and that the second and third world countries affected more (by the disasters). Regarding the solution of this problem, in order reduce the effects of disasters and continue sustainable development, it is important in this sense that disaster legislation and sustainable development plans and actions are gender sensitive and ensure gender equality. For this reason, in order to reduce disaster risks and minimize disaster losses, women should be included in disaster administration processes, their legislation should be reorganized sensitive to gender and their active participation in practice should be ensured. With this thesis, disaster legislation will be evaluated with a gender-sensitive view, and then recommendations will be presented on why and how our current disaster legislation should be gender sensitive within the framework of national and international gender and disaster legislation assessment.
