Analysis of gender roles through residential representations: civil architecture memory ankara 1930-1980 project(sivil mimari bellek Ankara 1930–1980 projesi)

Gender refers to the roles and behaviors that shape the lives of women and men as determined by society. Gender roles, which determine the position of individuals within society, are constructed based on norms and values shaped by social, cultural, and historical contexts. Numerous studies have been conducted on the concept of gender across many disciplines, resulting in a vast body of literature. Within this literature, studies have also been conducted in the fields of architecture and design. Studies on residential buildings in the field of architecture are of particular importance and make gender roles visible. This study examines how the formation of modern housing has transformed gender roles. The aim is to understand how these roles shape people's lives and how the design of their spaces reinforces these roles. While conducting this study, previous literature studies on gender roles were examined to reveal the general framework of the subject. The way the subject is addressed within the discipline of architecture and design was examined. Subsequently, research was conducted on the subject of representation due to the readability of design details and the technical information they contain. While conducting this study, data on gender roles hidden in the spatial design of the plan drawings in the Civil Architectural Memory Ankara 1930-1980 Project Archive, and architectural drawing representations, including figures found in section and elevation drawings, were examined to understand how gender roles were constructed through residential spaces. This examination was conducted in two periods: the Early Republican Period (1923-1950) and the post-1950 period. It is believed that information about how women are portrayed in residential representations and their relationship with public spaces, the spaces they occupy, and the construction of male and gender-neutral representations will raise awareness about gender roles and the position of individuals in society.
