ABSTRACT MSc. Thesis HEAVY METAL IN SOILS OF CHROMIUM USING CORN (Zea mays L.) PLANT REMOVAL OF PHYTOMEDIATION Merve GÖKER Tekirdağ Namık Kemal University Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences Department of Soil Science and Plant Nutrition Supervisor: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sevinç ADİLOĞLU Removal of contaminated soils by physical and chemical methods, as they cause high costs. There is more natural and economic applications alternative to these. One of the most primary and dangerous substances create, significant dimensions to the lives of living beings heavy metals forming toxic effects. Phytoremediation technique is used to cleaning of heavy metal toxicity and removes the pollution of polluted soils. This study was carried out the usability with the phytomediation technique of the soil contaminated with Cr metal. Using the phytoremediation method, it is investigated whether corn plant are hyperacumerator plants in soils contaminated with chromium heavy metal. In order to increase the solubility of the chromium heavy metal, chelate is given to the soil in different amounts and the success of cleaning the Cr element of corn plant has been evaluated. Cr element was given to soil and phytoremediation were determined using corn plant. In order to increase the content of phytoremediation, chelate is given to soil in different amounts and the success of cleaning the Cr element of corn plant has been examined. Trial random blocks according to the trial plan, the experiment was carried out in 18 pots with 3 replicates and 5 chelate doses (0, 10, 20, 40, 80 mmol/kg) in controlled conditions according to the trial plan according to full chance. 30 ppm CrO3 was given to the soil in pots and incubated for 30 days. 150 mg/kg N, 100 mg/kg P, 125 mg/kg K is added to the pots corn seeds are applied together with the planting according to the needs of the irrigation has been made. In the growth process of the plants by harvesting, respectively the chromium content of the stem and root parts was 2,81 mg/kg, while 80 mmol/kg of EDTA chelate was 31,46 mg/kg. This was statistically significant at 5 % level. The chromium content of the plant was determined as 18,57 mg/kg in the control, whereas the highest chelate was 34,95 mg/kg. In this research, it has been shown that corn plant is a hyper accumulative plant in phytoremediation method which is an economical and applicable method for cleaning soil contaminated with Cr(VI).
