Comparison of manuel marking method and verion digital marking method in toric intraocular lens alignment

Abstract (EN)

Purpose: To compare manual marking method and Verion digital marking method in toric intraocular lens alignment. Methods: The files of patients who underwent toric intraocular lens implantation in the Department of Ophthalmology at Dokuz Eylul University Hospital between November 2018 - April 2019 are reviewed retrospectively. Patients with at least 1 month follow-up in the postoperative period were included. Preoperative and postoperative kerometry, refractometry and visual acuity (LogMar) between the two groups were compared for the 1st day, 1st week and 1st month in the postoperative period. Rotation degrees of intraocular lens between two groups were compared in 1st month. Results: 67 eyes of 45 patients were included in the study. The mean toric intraocular lens misalignment was 4.75 ± 4.4 degree in manual marking group (Group 1) and was 3.4 ± 3.6 degree in Verion digital marking group (Group 2) and there was no statistically significant difference between them (p:0.16). While toric intraocular lens rotation degree was not statistically different between eyes with the rule astigmatism, was statistically low between eyes against the rule astigmatism in Group 2 (p: 0.003). 6 of 7 eyes with 10 degrees or more toric intraocular lens rotation belonged to Group 1 (13.16 ± 2.78 degree). There was no statistically significiant difference in keratometric astigmatism between 2 groups but refractive astigmatism was lower in Group 1 in preoperative period (1.77 D , 2.68 D, respectively, p:0,028). But in 1st month , keratometric astigmatism was lower in Group 1 (1.62±1.07D, 2.18 ± 1.33D , respectively, p:0.03). There was no difference in refractive astigmatism between groups in postoperative period. The total number of eyes with total astigmatism of 0.5 D and below was 43, of which 26 were in Group 1 and 17 in Group 2. There was no significant difference between groups. No intraoperative complications occured during surgery. Conclusions:There is no difference between two groups in terms of the rotation of the toric intraocular lens. Verion digital marking method provides convenience to the surgeon because it makes manual marking unnecessary during the preoperative period and is less affected by the rotation of the eye. In addition, although there is no statistical difference, between groups, intraocular lens rotation of 10 ° and above is less common in the digital marking group. Manual marking method still remains as an effective and reliable merhod, since access these devices is not always possible to utilize.
