A ship-type brazier found in the ancient city of Tios/Tieion and the development of ship braziers in the Mediterranean

Portable barbecues used for cooking and heating food in ancient times are called "brazier". Since fire and hearth were considered sacred in the Hellenic world due to their connection with the Hestia cult, braziers, which were also used as cult objects, were found in large numbers in land excavations. However, since the kitchen equipment that will feed the crew and passengers during sea voyages has not developed in parallel with the technology of the age, a special type of practical cooking and heating stove has been developed to prevent the danger of fire on ships. These portable ship stoves are called "ship type brazier". An example of ship braziers, which are found in smaller numbers than their land counterparts on the coasts of Bodrum, Knidos, Antalya and Israel, is exhibited in the ancient city of Tios in Filyos. There are functional and formal similarities between this example and the examples found in the Aegean islands and especially in the Eastern Mediterranean. The find, which is thought to date back to between 2nd century BC – 2nd century AD will have a special place among ship–type braziers in the literature, as it is the only example made of andesite stone.
