Evaluation of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) efficiency and adequacy on CPR manikin according to physiological parameters of medical faculty intern students

Abstract (EN)
In our study, we aimed to investigate whether physiological parameters such as gender and body mass index (BMI) characteristics of the practitioner, as well as smoking and regular sports status, affect the quality of CPR. The numerical data of the chest compressions performed on the mannequin by the interns who completed their internship at Gaziantep University Faculty of Medicine Emergency Medicine Clinic were recorded electronically in the simulation center located at the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine. CPR quality parameters such as chest compression depth, number, relaxation, correct hand position and continuous CPR application were examined for 6 cycles. Statistical analysis of the data was done with SPSS 22.0 Windows version package program. Our study was carried out in Gaziantep Medical Faculty Simulation Center between May 2022 and November 2022. 62 male and 38 female interns participated in the study. The average BMI value of the interns was calculated as 23.7 kg/m₂. The number of those who do sports regularly was 13, their smoking status was 34 active smokers, 12 quitters, and 54 never smoked. Male interns and interns with higher BMI (BMI≥24) performed better chest compression depth and chest compression number (p<0.05). The female and low BMI (BMI<24) group performed chest relaxation and correct hand position parameters more successfully (p<0.05). There was no difference between the groups in the continuous CPR application parameter (p>0.05). Non-smoker female interns were more successful in chest relaxation than active smoking female interns, but there was no significant difference in other parameters. Smoking status did not differ significantly among male interns. Regular exercise did not differ significantly in the parameters of chest compression depth, chest compression number, chest relaxation, correct hand position and continuous CPR application. CPR is an intervention that requires both strength and technical knowledge. For this reason, we think that muscle mass and practical training are effective on the quality of CPR.
