Knowledge, attitudes and behaviors of medical students regarding organ donation

Purpose: The aim of this study is to determine the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of medical faculty students regarding organ donation, and at the same time to raise their awareness and interest in the subject. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out among students of the Faculty of Medicine at Gaziantep University. Data were collected through a questionnaire that assessed the sociodemographic characteristics of the participants, as well as their knowledge and attitudes regarding organ donation. Findings: A total of 348 medical students aged between 17 and 33 years participated in the study . The mean knowledge score was 16.55±3.48, and the mean attitude score was 9.29±2.39. Only % 29 of the students considered themselves sufficiently knowledgeable about organ donation, while % 28.2 had received education on the subject, and % 14.9stated that the information provided was sufficient. Although legal awareness was high (organ donation is legal: % 92.2), knowledge about the process and procedures remained limited. The proportion of students possessing a donor card was % 5.5, while % 54.3 expressed willingness to donate and % 83 stated they would accept an organ if needed. Media campaigns emerged as the most effective method of promoting organ donation (% 72.1). Attitude scores were higher among females and increased with academic year. Significant differences in both knowledge and attitudes were observed among religious belief groups. A positive but weak correlation was found between knowledge and attitude (r=0.29; p<0.001). Conclusion: Although medical students generally have a positive attitude toward organ donation, their overall knowledge and awareness of procedures remain markedly insufficient. Media-based awareness campaigns, integration of organ donation education into the curriculum, and clear explanations of legal and ethical processes may help bridge these gaps. Although the relationship between knowledge and attitude is weak, it is statistically significant; for sustainable behavioral change, not only information but also practical approaches that address and correct misconceptions are required.
