The tradition of corn gathering in the Tonya region

This thesis provides a detailed examination of the tradition of "Mısır İmecesi" (Corn Gathering) in the Tonya district of Trabzon province. The tradition of "Mısır İmecesi" serves as a concrete example of social solidarity and cooperation, representing an important aspect of agricultural and cultural life in the region. The thesis explores the historical development of corn cultivation and its socio-economic and cultural impacts on the Tonya region. The primary objective of this research is to analyze the integration of corn farming into the economic and cultural life of the Tonya region and to examine the effects of this process on social changes. The study is based on qualitative data obtained through field research and personal interviews. In this context, the communal activities performed during the stages of corn planting, hoeing, harvesting, and husking are examined, with an emphasis on their social and cultural functions. The thesis underscores that corn gathering is not merely an agricultural activity but also a ritual that strengthens social bonds among community members, transmits cultural values, and fosters social cohesion. The games of Çul and Kulbaç, played during the husking phase, highlight the entertainment and cultural transmission aspects of this tradition. These games, played during the husking stage, reinforce the sense of solidarity and unity among community members. The study also covers the process of the global spread of corn from the Americas and its impact on local economies and cultures. The integration of corn into the agricultural practices of the Tonya region has occurred through the traditional imece culture, and this process has shaped local agricultural rituals. This research documents the profound impact of economic interactions on local cultural practices and emphasizes the significant role of corn in strengthening cultural identity and social bonds in Tonya.
