This Master's thesis examines the representation of the feminine experience of abortion in Annie Ernaux's novel Happening (L'événement) (2000), through a comparative study of two analyses: a literary semiotic analysis of Ernaux's autobiographical work and an analysis of its intersemiotic translation to film as Happening (L'Événement) (2021), directed by Audrey Diwan. The novel that functions as the film's starting text is the account of an experience of clandestine abortion survived in 1963, narrated, thirty years after its occurrence, from personal documentation by the author. Twenty years after the novel's publication in 2000, director Audrey Diwan produced a film adaptation of the novel under the same name. The film, which at first glance contains quite different features from the novel, has won numerous awards and is an outstanding example of intersemiotic translation. The first analysis, which focuses on the novel Happening (L'événement), draws on the semiotic theory established by the Paris School of Semiotics (l'École sémiotique de Paris). Based on Ferdinand de Saussure's theory of the linguistic sign, the theory of literary semiotics of the Paris School has evolved since its founding in the 1960s, thanks to the contributions of its members, notably founders Algirdas Julien Greimas and Jean-Claude Coquet. Sündüz Öztürk Kasar has attempted to apply the model of literary semiotic analysis to literary translation. The model she uses is based on several theories developed in and around the Paris School of Semiotics, such as Jean-Claude Coquet's theory of instances of enunciation (la théorie des instances énonçantes), Algirdas Julien Greimas' actantial schema, Roland Barthes' semiological analysis and Gérard Genette's narratological approach. The second analysis treats Audrey Diwan's film Happening (L'Événement) as a corpus from the perspective of intersemiotic translation, a field at the intersection of Adaptation Studies and translatology. The model of intersemiotic analysis is proposed by Katerina Perdikaki, who draws her theories and reference terminology from Adaptation Studies and Translation Studies, but her main point of departure is Kitty van Leuven-Zwart's classification of intersemiotic translation. Perdikaki adopts certain aspects of van Leuven-Zwart's model and adds to it the specific characteristics of cinema as an audiovisual means of communication. Within the framework of these two analyses, the present study aims to observe the evolution of the representation of a lived experience, the female experience of abortion, in the form of a narrative that has circulated between different media.
