Abstract (EN)

Matte glaze is the name given to the glazes, containing raw materials in its formula content and obtained as a result of the formation of a flat appearance on the surface as it is affected by factors such as the temperature of kiln-drying, cooling and the degradation of the micro-crystal structures contained therein. In addition to such factors, two other elements should be mentioned in the formation of matte glazes. These are refraction and reflection of light. The objects become visible with the reflection of light but the refraction of light occurs when there is an inverse proportion between the time that the light reaches an object and its speed. In this event, it causes the diffusion of light on the object to other places. With the diffusion of light to different places on the object, the object to which light is diffused has a matte appearance but not bright. These events are one of the leading factors that make the glaze matte or bright. Matte glazes differ from gloss glazes. These glazes contain small crystals embedded in a glassy structure. These crystals must be small and well dispersed for the glaze to have a smooth surface. In order to obtain a good matte glaze, the speed of the cooling process after kilning has a great importance as well. These matte glazes are more durable than gloss glazes and can give the surface positive mechanical properties. Matte glazes are usually made by adding dulling raw materials to the existing colourless, transparent base glazes. This method demonstrates the purpose of our thesis. In addition, as a result of literature review, the thesis is aimed to be a good source about matte glazes due to the lack of sufficient sources of matte glazes. Three transparent and three opaque glazes were selected as base glazes from different glaze recipes prepared during the implementation phase of the study. On each of the glazes prepared with the biscuit firing casting sludge, vacuum white sludge, chamotte mud and red clay bodies were performed at 1000 C once and dipping method was applied. Calcite, titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, quartz and kaolin were added to these base glazes in 5% and 10% for matting. Glaze firings were performed at 1000 C, 1050 C and 1100 C. All glazes were applied to casting clay, vacuum white sludge, chamotte sludge and red clay. In the first part of the research, a brief history of the glaze is given. Afterwards, matte glazes were examined and examined extensively. All results are discussed and presented in the conclusion section.
