Allogenic erytrocyte transfusion management in vertebral surgery due to traumatic vertebral fracture intraoperatively and postoperatively

Loss of blood is an important problem in intraoperatively and postoperatively. Transfusion requirements and frequency depend on many reasons. The aim of this study was to evaluate frequency of blood transfusion intraoperatively and postoperatively in traumatic vertebral surgery and impact of blood transfusions on complications which looked postoperatively. Data were collected from patients' medical records that included age, gender, body weight, ASA score, comorbidities, level of vertebral surgery, period of surgery and anaesthesiology, preoperative hb values, hb values before transfusion, indications of transfusion, volume of erytrocyte transfusion, intraoperative inotrop using, period of PACU and ICU stay, period of mechanic ventilation, postoperative hb value, volume of postoperative erytrocyte transfusion and time of discharging to the hospital. Intraoperatively, the patients' who didn't receive erytrocyt suspension, period of hospital stay and mechanical ventilation time was shorter than patients' who received erytrosyte transfusion. The patients were divided into two groups according to the clinics (neurosurgery and orthopedics). Patients' operation period, amount of intraoperative erytrocyte transfusion, staying time in ICU and clinic. There was no statistical difference. As a result; giving an erytrocyte suspension intraoperatively had adverse effects on postoperative results in traumatic vertebral surgery. But comorbidities and another injuries affected to postoperative results. The strategies can develop for decreasing blood loss and erytrocyte transfusion intraoperatively. They can provide benefit for postoperative period. Key words:vertebral surgery- vertebral fracture - blood transfusion
