Abstract (EN)
INTRODUCTION: Triclosan is used as an antibacterial agent in numerous commercial products. Some of these products are soaps, deodorants, shampoos, cleansing lotions and other cosmetics. Triclosan has proven toxic effects. The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of triclosan on hearing in rats. METHODS: Forty healthy sprague-dawley rats with normal response to the distortion-product autoacoustic emission (DPOAE) measurements were divided into 4 groups. Group 1 as control group was given only corn oil, group 2 was given 5 mg / kg triclosan dissolved in corn oil, group 3 was given 10 mg / kg triclosan dissolved in corn oil, and group 4 was given 100 mg / kg triclosan dissolved in corn oil, triclosan and corn oil were administered by oral gavage to all groups. Before the study and on the 30th day of the study DPOAE measurements of the rats were performed. RESULTS: No statistically significant difference was found in the group 1, group 2, and group 3 at 1000Hz, 1500Hz, 2000Hz, 3000Hz, 4000Hz, 6000Hz and 8000Hz when the DP values obtained from OAE measurements before and after study were compared (p > 0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in group 4 receiving 100 mg / kg triclosan dissolved in corn oil at 1000Hz, 1500Hz, 6000Hz and 8000Hz when the DP values obtained from the OAE measurements before and after the study (p> 0,05) while there was a statistically significant difference at 2000Hz, 3000Hz and 4000Hz (p <0,05). CONCLUSION: Triclosan is a very controversial chemical in recent times, although it is found in many consumer goods. Although there are many toxic features of triclosan in the literature, there is no study about the effect of triclosan on hearing. In our study, low dose triclosan did not cause hearing loss, but hearing loss was observed in the group which was given high dose triclosan (100 mg / kg). These findings suggests that triclosan causes hearing loss in a dose-dependent manner. Keywords: Hearing Loss, Triclosan, Rat
