Cinema in the context of consumption approaches

The legitimacy of capitalism in the global world is provided by the mass media. Cinema, which is one of the most effective mass media tools in the consumption culture, has become the biggest motivator of consumption ideologies and consumption desire on people. In the globalizing world, a common culture was created with cinema, and then a consumption liturgy was injected into this culture. Consumers have turned consumption into a form of worship in order to exist in these consumption rituals. The hegemony of capitalism has used this powerful weapon in the culture industry 'like the power of the God', and has defined cinema as a hobby and entertainment tool by combining it with the concept of leisure in order to hide this effect. The human being, lost in the desire to consume, is alienated first from his labor and then from himself, in Marx's terms. The ideology of consumption through cinema is built on people's selves and identities. People trying to exist in a consumption culture need to be justified through movie characters. Cinema has become the panopticon of humanity by the culture of consumption. Most fundamentally, consumption cinema and art cinema were examined comparatively through directors, films and cinematographic techniques. In the thesis, the view that the consumption culture uses cinema as a great weapon globally and dominates the societies in this way is discussed. In this study, in which the art of cinema is discussed together with the consumption concepts such as consumption society, culture industry and spectacle society, the distinctions between art cinema and mainstream cinema are emphasized through consumption rituals.
