Turgut Zaim's paintings: The image of women and social order: An assessment within the framework of Malcolm Barnard's theory

This study examines the works featuring women by Turgut Zaim, one of the original representatives of Turkish painting, from the perspective of social order and within the framework of Malcolm Barnard's theory of visual culture. The study examines how the artist renders visible Anatolian daily life, production relations, and cultural values through the female figure. In this context, five works, titled "Villager Women," "Woman Rolling Out Yufka," "Woman Weaving Carpets," "Cradle," and "Yörükler Köyü," are examined, and the elements of the social order reflected by the female representations are evaluated through descriptive analysis. The analysis, conducted in line with visual culture theory, reveals that Zaim's images of women are not only artistic aesthetics but also social documents representing the socio-cultural structure of the period. The findings demonstrate that Turgut Zaim constructed female figures as powerful symbols reflecting Anatolia's cultural memory through depictions of productivity, domestic roles, solidarity, traditional attire, and rural settings. Furthermore, the representations of women in his works also bear the influence of the modernization process, thus becoming visual expressions of a social transformation where traditional life and modern values intersect. Ultimately, Zaim's images of women are not merely the product of an individual artistic approach but also a multilayered visual narrative reflecting the ideological orientations, social roles, and cultural identity construction of the period.
