Comparison of terminologies used in the judicial process in Turkish and German legal systems

Changing and developing world standards along with the technological improvements resulted in emerging fields, and in alignment with the demand of transfering these developments to everywhere all around the world each sector has an increasing requirement for translation and professional translators, all of these requirements diverse responsibilities on translators. Translators with increasing responsibilities, translation process can be simplified by conducting terminological researchs. In this work, a German-Turkish comparative bilingual terminology work was presented. The work is divided into two sections: Theoretical work section and example-based terminology section. First, term, terminology, terminology principles and terminology work were described, and the link between terminology and translation studies was established. Since this thesis aims to investigate legal terms, legal language and idiosyncrasies of legal language were described, and the factors that increase translation difficulty were presented. Next, German and Turkish legal systems were examined from a historical perspective, the similarities and differences were identified, and the judicial systems of Germany and Turkey were described. In the application section, the content, form, style, and tenses used in German and Turkish divorce decree samples were examined and compared. A list of terms was created from these samples, and the grammatical structure of each term was analyzed and if applicable, synonyms and abbreviations were provided. Finally, equivalents in the other language or adequate legal translations were presented.
