Abstract (EN)

As it is known, the first Turkish-American diplomatic and commercial relations began with the USA's contact with the Western Hearths of the Ottoman Empire in the late 18th century and continued to develop until the collapse of the Ottoman Empire. The Ottoman Empire's entry into World War I on the side of Germany and the USA's declaration of war on Germany while the war was still ongoing led to the severance of diplomatic and commercial relations between the parties in 1917. After the establishment of the Republic of Turkey, the Trade and Seyr-ü Sefain Agreement signed between the parties on October 1, 1929 enabled the resumption of relations. A new trade agreement was signed in 1939 and the commercial privileges given to the USA were further expanded. II. During the World War, when economic and commercial relations with Germany were interrupted; The USA took the first place in Turkish foreign trade. In the post-war period, the USA implemented economic and military policies such as the Truman Doctrine and the Marshall Plan, in order to fight against Soviet expansionism on the one hand, and to support the European States devastated in the war, on the other hand, and Turkey also benefited from US aid within the framework of the Truman Doctrine and the Marshall Plan. With the Democratic Party coming to power in Turkey in 1950, more liberal and liberal practices were implemented in the economy and foreign trade, and as a result, there were significant increases in imports from the USA. In the period between 1950 and 1960, Turkey imported mostly machinery, fuel and mineral oils, grain, land transportation vehicles and iron and steel products from the USA. In return, the most tobacco, chrome, dried fruits and nuts, minerals and herbal products were exported to the USA. The trade volume between the two countries has changed over the years due to reasons such as the policies implemented by the DP regarding the economy, the Truman Doctrine and the Marshall Plan, the Korean War, changes in weather conditions, and the low quality and quantity of crops. In Turkish-US commercial relations during the DP Period, it is seen that Turkey was a state that exported mostly raw materials and imported finished goods in return.
