The establishment process of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and Turkey's Cyprus policy in the Turkish press (1975 ? 1983)

We have tried to search the policy that was held by Turkish Republic during the foundation of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus with the great help of the daily newspapers; Milliyet, Cumhuriyet, Tercüman, Hürriyet, Son Havadis, Adalet and Zafer.The Republic of Cyprus which was founded in 1960, was under the gurantee of Turkey, Greece and England as an independent and non ? aligned state.However, Archbishop Makarios, the President of Cyprus, acting according to ENOSIS, tried to make the Turks withdraw from the partnership and tried to make them to be accepted as minority. Makarios, who put ?Akritas Plan? into practice, proposed to change the Article 13 of the Constitution. Upon the rejection of the proposal, violence and assimilation towards Turkish Cypriots started. Turkey, who couldn?t get support for a solution from the USA, England or Greece had to carry out ?Peace Operation? by itself. After the operation, Turkey tried to implement a federational thesis which is based on a geographical structure. Since the diplomatic contacts had not reached to an end and because of the decree of embargo imposed by the USA on Turkey, ?Turkish Federative State of Cyprus? was declared by Turkish Cypriot s unilaterally. Greek Cypriot Administration, that made an effort to take this struggle to a long-term period, made contacts with the USA, UN, EEC and other countries which were resulted in taking some decisions against Turkey and Turkish Cypriots. Turkey, who tried to find a solution, even brought up to give back some parts of the island that they controlled. However, Greek Cypriot Administration insisted on not supporting the attempts for a solution, with the foreign support behind them. Hereupon, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus was declared as a solution.
