Investigation of environmental sustainability practices in the turkish cement industry

This study analyses the environmental sustainability practices of the cement industry in Turkey in depth. The high energy consumption and carbon emissions associated with cement production processes have increased the importance of sustainability strategies in the sector. The study examines the level of adoption and implementation of various sustainability strategies by cement producers in Turkey, including waste-derived fuel management, energy efficiency, renewable energy use and carbon emission reduction. The research methodology includes a comprehensive assessment of the sustainability performance of cement companies listed on Borsa Istanbul. In this context, the efforts and practices of the companies to comply with the environmental principles of the Sustainability Principles Compliance Framework, as set out in the CMB Corporate Governance Communiqué published in the Official Gazette on 2 October 2020, are detailed. This study employed qualitative and quantitative data analysis techniques to assess the status of the Turkish cement industry with regard to environmental sustainability and future environmental sustainability targets. The research findings indicated that the Turkish cement industry partially complies with the principles of environmental sustainability, and that additional measures and strategies are required for full compliance and higher performance. It was emphasised that government and private sector cooperation is critical, especially in increasing energy efficiency, adopting innovative technologies and reducing carbon emissions. Furthermore, it is asserted that enhanced sustainability performance will confer economic benefits upon all stakeholders. The study furnishes comprehensive data on the present state of sustainability practices in the Turkish cement sector, thereby serving as a valuable reference point for future research and sectoral policies.
