An analysis of the primary school dictionary published by the Turkish Language Association in terms of gender

Within this gender and language relation focused study, a phallogocentric content analysis is carried out regarding the words taking place in the Primary School Dictionary Published by The Turkish Language Association which was founded in 1932 and determining the official language policy of the Government of Turkish Republic.With this study, it is aimed to reveal how TDK normalises the usage of a masculine language since early ages and to reveal its effects on permanency of the consideration of women being in second status in Turkey. In the analysis of this study it is determined that primary school dictionary which is handled with the masculine point of view presents a sexist approach and sustainability of this approach is inherited from generation to generation provided with this masculine language. To eliminate the sexist view and understanding in this issue, it is inevitable to start to rewriting the dictionary with a team formed by sociology, literary, folklore, anthropology, medicine, engineering etc. scientists, who contributed to this issue and are sensitive to gender equality.
