Elements of fantastic story in Turkish literature (1980-1990)

This study is about the fantastic stories written in Turkish literature between 1980-1990. In the study, the general characteristics of fantastic literature, which is a popular genre, were revealed and text analysis was made according to Tzvetan Todorov's theory of fantastic literature. In this way, opinions were expressed on what features are required for a story to be considered fantastic. The reason for choosing the years 1980-1990 in the study is the reflections of Turkish political life on literature. In 1980, as a result of the 12 Eylül Askeri Darbesi, freedoms and press organizations were restricted. Turkish people, trying to adapt to both the new government and the capitalist system, show great interest in television, technology and fashion. In the field of literature, individualization intensified, the number of women writers increased, and right-wing and left-wing writers wrote in the same magazines. In the 1980s, the increase in the number of works especially in the science fiction and fantasy genres makes this period remarkable. In the study, first of all, fantasy as a literary genre and its historical development both in the world and in our country are briefly mentioned. In addition, similar/close genres such as science fiction, magical realism, horror literature, gothic, noir fiction, utopia and uchronia are compared with fantastic literature. Then, the genres such as fairy tale, mythology, epic, legend, folk tale, which are the source of the fantastic story were mentioned. In addition, the characteristics of the fantastic story and the reasons for writing and reading it were mentioned. The fantastic stories written between 1980 and 1990, which are the main subject of the study, are analyzed in terms of elements such as character selection, time, place and event in the light of fantastic literature theory. The characteristics of the fantastic stories written between the specified years were mentioned by making evaluations on the examples of the works given. The study aims to explain in detail the fantastic stories written in Turkish literature between 1980 and 1990 by making literary, historical, social and political evaluations. Through the textual analysis, people, time, place and events were identified and classifications were made about the fantastic genre, which is difficult to determine the boundaries.
