TÜRK FİKİR HAYATINDA MİLLİYETÇİ MUHAFAZAKAR KADIN FİGÜRÜ: AYŞE DERGİSİ, EMİNE IŞINSU VE SAMİHA AYVERDİ

The aim of the present study is twofold: 1) to analyze the reflections of national-conservative ideas in the works of Samiha Ayverdi and Emine Işınsu, who are among the prominent representatives of national-conservative ideas in Turkish intellectual life; 2) to demonstrate the national-conservative discourses in Ayşe magazine, which is one of the primary sources of the present study, and how the female figure is defined and its role in the society is shaped in line with this idea. The present study seeks to reveal how the two example female representatives define and reflect the social, intellectual and ethical role of national-conservative women. In this vein, the study aims to reveal the viewpoint of Turkish women in the works of two writers who were well-acquainted with their era, could analyze it well and wrote their books with a national-conservative perspective. The first chapter gives the theoretical background of the study, which employs a qualitative research method, and presents the theoretical framework and the definitions of terms including ideology, modernization, conservatism, nationalism. Chapter 2 discusses the historical background of nationalism and conservatism in Turkish intellectual tradition and touches upon the foundations of national conservative women's identity, which has both ideological and cultural underpinnings and emerged from the integration of concepts such as religion, family, tradition and nation. The chapter also gives a brief history of the women's magazines in Türkiye and analyzes the national-conservative discourse in Ayşe magazine. Chapter 3 analyzes the works of Emine Işınsu and Samiha Ayverdi in line with the national-conservative ideology. The final chapter presents an overall evaluation of the thesis and offers suggestions for future research regarding possible contributions of Ayşe magazine and the works of Samiha Ayverdi and Emine Işınsu, who are among the prominent representatives of national-conservative discourse in Turkish intellectual history and literature. The findings of the study indicate that national-conservative ideology was reproduced in the 20th-century Türkiye guided by the historical, cultural and spiritual values through Ayşe magazine and the works of Samiha Ayverdi and Emine Işınsu. It further shows how this ideology was systematically represented in periodicals and literary works.
