Evaluation of folk tales published in the journal of Turkish Folklore Research, volumes 1-83 with respect to cognitive, affective, and psychomotor characteristics of 11-14 age group students

79 folktales from the first 183 pages of the journal of Turkish Folklore Researches, published between the years of 1949 and 1980 as 360 volumes, were evaluated with respect to the cognitive, affective and psychomotor characteristics of 11-14 year old students.Folktales were evaluated in terms of their content, messages and protagonists considering their cognitive, affective and psychomotor appropriateness and their quality in the provision of the opportunities for the development of the skills proposed by the constructivist approach. Texts were evaluated in terms of the turn of phrase regarding its effectiveness in the arousal of curiosity and interest in children, its functionality in enjoying children in addition to educating them and its being literary.Our study consists of three parts and five appendix. In the first part, cognitive, affective and psychomotor characteristics of the target group to whom the texts will be suggested as a result of this study were discussed. In the second part, children?s literature and the role of folktales in children?s literature were examined. In the third part, the evaluation of folktales from the related journal was presented. In the appendix section, the texts of 79 folktales were introduced. Moreover, in the appendix section, results concluded from the evaluation of folktales were offered along with 4 tables.With this study both a vanishing journal; namely, the Turkish Folklore Researches, was pointed to the researchers not only in the field of Turkish Education and Literature but also to researchers from different areas, and the need for the obtainment of different and unpublished folktales for Turkish course books of 11-14 year old children was met to a certain level. The texts appropriate for the use of instructional methods like grouping and drama while developing such skills as critical thinking, empathy, tolerance, self expression and creative thinking were tendered to the plaudit of teachers and researchers.KEYWORDS: Turkish Folklore Researches, children?s developmental areas and characteristics, folktales, children?s literature.
