The use of Turkish folk literature elements in Turkish teaching and its effect on creative writing

The aim of this study is to determine the effect of the use of Turkish folk literature elements in teaching Turkish to creative writing. In order to make this determination, the problem statement of the research creates the question of "What is the effect of the use of Turkish folk literature elements in teaching Turkish to creative writing?". Research is a qualitative case study. Students' opinions were consulted with open- ended survey forms prepared by the researcher and also working papers were prepared to enable students to participate effectively in the application process and to develop creative thinking skills. The data used in the research were analyzed with content analysis. Nowadays, content analysis is one of the methods frequently used in qualitative data analysis types. In addition, NVIVO Pro 12 qualitative data analysis software program, which is frequently used in qualitative research, is used in the research. With this program, the answers given by the students were categorized and the themes and sub-themes that emerged under the sub problems were determined. The frequencies of the student expressions entering this theme and sub-themes were determined. Moreover, word clouds were formed by looking at the word frequency analysis in the student expressions in the themes that emerged under the sub problems of the research. The study group consisted of 24 students of the 8/K class of Düzce Mehmet Zahid Kevseri Imam Hatip Secondary School. The open- ended survey forms applied in the study were conducted with 12 students when reasonable answers were considered. The study group was randomly determined to be heterogeneous in terms of academic and socio-economic aspects. During six weeks, 24 students participated in the study and the Turkish folk tale "Şirvân Şâh ve Şemâ'il Bânû" was read and working papers were prepared and applied for four weeks. Furthermore, in the last two weeks of the application, only role playing and writing of the students 'predictions about the pre- and post-story were made in order to develop the students' role playing and creative writing skills. In the research, in the 8th grade Turkish lesson, a lessaon was given by using creative drama method by using Turkish folk tales which is one of the elements of Turkish folk literature and it was evaluated according to the findings obtained whether this method has an effect on the students' creative writing skills or not. Since the Turkish folk story used in the research is a text from the 16th century, the grade level where the application was made was determined as 8th grade due to its language and narrative characteristics, and the level of cultural and social events. As a result of the research, it has been found out that using Turkish folk literature elements in Turkish teaching contributes to creative writing skills As a result of the research, it is revealed that teaching Turkish drama by using creative drama method contributes to the students'creative writing skills. Based on this result, it can be suggested that Turkish teachers should adapt Turkish folk literature products in Turkish courses and re-interpret them with contemporary approaches and adapt them to the present day to develop students' creativity.
