Abstract (EN)

This study aims to analyze the socioeconomic determinants influencing obesity among women in Turkey. Based on the notion that obesity is not only a result of individual lifestyle choices but also closely linked to structural socioeconomic factors, variables such as age, educational attainment, and employment status are examined for their impact on female obesity. Within this framework, the study seeks to explore the multifaceted and stratified relationships between women's obesity status and their socioeconomic positions. The rationale for conducting this study in the Turkish context stems from the noticeable rise in obesity rates among women in recent years, with the increase being particularly significant among low-income and less-educated groups. The analysis is based on the 2017 Turkey Nutrition and Health Survey, which offers comprehensive and nationally representative data. In this regard, the study aims to highlight key socioeconomic inequalities affecting women's health in Turkey and to draw the attention of policymakers to this growing public health issue. A Generalized Ordered Logit Model is employed to categorize women according to their obesity levels and to estimate coefficients for each category. This model allows for a nuanced analysis that accounts for individual-level heterogeneity. Although the dataset is robust and features a strong sampling structure, it is not without limitations, including potential non-sampling errors, self-reporting biases, and temporal constraints. Ultimately, the study aims to shed light on the socioeconomic foundations of obesity among Turkish women and contribute to the development of effective intervention strategies and public health policies.
