Abstract (EN)
Writing has occurred in line with the requirements, as a result of living in communities. Writing, which has been accepted, used or changed by almost all of the civilizations through the history, has become one of the most basic materials of artistic approaches as well as communication purposes. During the Ottoman Period, the society who was not able to draw any depictions because of the period's conditions, using the Arabic "elifba" (alphabet) that has 28 letters, assigned an artistic value to writing and acquired "hüsn-i hat" (line art). With alphabet reform due to proclamation of the republic, which led to use of Latin alphabet, the calligraphy art that existed in western cultures has been attained. Calligraphic art met with line art, in terms of "cherishing and embellishing the writing", influenced by line art but differed in disciplinary ways. The performers who lead in development of Turkish Calligraphy and add artistic value to writing are called "Calligraphy Artists". Ethem Çalışkan, who was born at the same year with alphabet reform, devoted himself to calligraphy art, has produced and still continues to produce art since his higher education years. Ethem Çalışkan was a student and workshop assistant of Emin Barın who brought writing education in Fine Arts field to Turkey and produced calligraphic artworks by using Turkish alphabet, during the first years of the Republic. This study aims to eternalize Ethem Çalışkan who keeps calligraphy art alive with his mastery, and to emphasize his witnessing over history and his experiences during all this process, based on the view of "from past to present, all the major personalities are appreciated after their loss".
