Vakit newspaper in Turkish Press

This research deals with the newspaper "Vakit" (1917) which has an important place in the Turkish press. Vakit was established in 1917 by the partnership of Ahmet Emin Yalman and Mehmet Asım Us, since 1923 it continued its publication life under the administration of Mehmet Asım Us, Hakkı Tarık Us and Hasan Rasim Us who were known as "Us brothers" in the Turkish press. In this research, the content of Vakit newspaper until 1959, when its daily publication ended, was analyzed chronologically. The first part of the research is entrance part which examines Vakit newspaper studies and which explains purpose, importance and method of the research. In the second part, general features of Vakit newspaper like the establishment, the administrative staff, publishing policy and issue data was examined. In the third, fourth, fifth and sixth parts, the content of the newspaper was researched in four different periods. In these sections, the gaze of the newspaper on the political, social and economic developments that took place in that period, and its cultural and literary content as well as the shape features of and journalistic understanding of the newspaper were examined under separate headings. Vakit embodied important writers of Turkish press history since its establishment. The research also includes the biographies of the authors in question and their journalistic activities in the Vakit newspaper. Vakit served as a "school" in the Turkish press by giving place to young writers in its columns. The newspaper plays the role of a vehicle for the construction of nationalism and the establishment of modernization in the 20th century. Vakit newspaper with publishing policy which followed up nationalism and westernization ideas fulfilled this function in the process of transition from empire to nation state, supported the national and revolutionary policies of central government. In this respect it performed a national journalism in Turkish press. In the conclusion part, determinations have been made about Vakit newspaper and it has been tried to reveal what kind of place it has in Turkish press.
