Three ideologist of Turkish nationalism: İsmail Gaspirali, Yusuf Akçura and Ziya Gökalp

This study is on the ideas of İsmail Gaspıralı, Yusuf Akçura, and Ziya Gökalp about Turkish nationalism. These thinkers are considered to have contributed to the structure of Turkish nationalism as an ideology. In this study, influence of İsmail Gaspıralı, Yusuf Akçura, and Ziya Gökalp?s ideas on the foundational philosophy of the Turkish Republic are discussed.This thesis is composed of four sections. In chapter one, theories of nationalism that were developed in the 20th century are analyzed. The theoretical and historical framework of the ideology of Turkish nationalism is discussed. The political, economic, and socio-cultural causes that gave rise to Turkish nationalism are analyzed under three respective titles.In chapter two, emergence of the ideology Turkish nationalism in the cultural and political realms is analyzed. In this section, the institutions which were founded for the aim of Turkish nationalism are evaluated, and the political party that moved Turkish nationalism to political power is evaluated.In chapter three, the ideas of İsmail Gaspıralı, Yusuf Akçura, and Ziya Gökalp, who are considered to have contributed to the development of Turkish nationalism as an ideology, are mentioned.In chapter four, influence of these three thinkers? ideas in the period after the foundation of the Turkish Republic are analyzed and the place of Turkish nationalism as an ideology in the foundational philosophy of the Turkish Republic is discussed. In order to emphasize the role of Turkish nationalism in the Turkish Republic?s foundation, also the ideas of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, who is the founder of the Turkish Republic and defined himself as a Turkish nationalist, are discussed. Finally, the effect of the ideology of Turkish nationalism on the political, economic, social and cultural reforms in the period of Republic is discussed.
