Formal analysis of post-2000 architectural project competitions in Turkish architecture

Throughout the history, architectural practice is impressed by various trends of the era within the frameworks of socio-cultural, economic and political dynamics. It is seen that the Turkish architectural process, which was divided into different subperiods by critics until 2000, is basically shaped under the effects of certain movements or concepts. However, after 2000s, when a more pluralistic architectural environment is of concern, it is possible to state that shorter visual / imaginary trends have been leading architectural practice –in parallel with the spirit of the era– beyond a single trend or concept. Competitions are important settings where quality of architectural design and service are reflected and contemporary architectural trends are clearly observed. Therefore, the findings acquired by examining architectural design competitions contain valuable information on the contemporary situation and further development of the Turkish architectural environment. Hence, in this study, it is aimed to develop an analytical perspective by itemizing all architectural design competitions held and concluded after 2000. Accordingly, it is expected that this study will contribute to literature by inquiring formal approaches after 2000 and conducting cross-readings on similarities and differences of various periods of the Turkish architectural environment and building typology.
