Libretto writing in Turkish opera

This research examines the historical development of libretto writing in Turkish opera and the cultural contexts it interacts with. The study examines the development of modern Turkish opera from its origins in Turkish drama, considered the first examples of the concept of the libretto, within the context of a unified tradition. Furthermore, some observations are made in light of the parallels established with the historical development of Western operas. The research also examines the adaptation of Turkish literary works into librettos, and examines in detail the use of national language structures, local motifs, and the reflections of national identity in operas since the founding of the Republic of Turkey. The aim is to identify how trends and preferences regarding libretto have changed in the decades following the institutionalization of opera in Turkey. The study examines the history of Turkish operas staged to date, their librettos, and the approaches of their creators to libretto writing. The social and artistic influences of the librettos are evaluated within the context of their messages, language use, and storytelling. The challenges encountered in libretto writing in modern Turkish opera and the innovative approaches developed in this field are also discussed as part of the research. When the data obtained from the research findings are considered as a whole, it is concluded that the general picture regarding libretto writing in Turkish opera cannot be explained solely by dramatic and theatrical requirements; sociological, political, and ideological orientations also play a role in this.
