Portrait in Turkish painting

The subject of portrait in Turkish art has held an important place in the history of art. During the Ottoman era, portrait art was mostly limited to making portraits of sultans or other important personalities. However, with modern Turkish art, the portrait subject reached a wider audience and allowed painters to express themselves with different techniques. Artists in the Republic era, influenced by Western art, added a different dimension to portrait art. They aimed to reflect different personalities, emotions, and characters by making portraits with realistic or stylized approaches. During this period, portrait art was not limited to the portraits of only wealthy or famous people, and portraits of ordinary people also began to be made. In modern Turkish art, the portrait subject still holds its importance. Portraits made with traditional and modern techniques reflect different personalities, cultures, and emotions. The portrait subject is a rich part of Turkish art and is still preferred by many artists today. With this study, an attempt has been made to address the subject of portrait in Turkish art.
