Family institution is considered as the basis of the society and contemplates the characteristics of the period. Changes in the society, manisfests itself on the family institution at first and attributes to history in different ways. One of the parties conveying this historical heritage is novelists. Novelists processes the society's belief and cultural texture, way and speed of change in an artistic form, and transfer these to reader. The novels, in this respect trail from social life and attract the attention of researchers. In this context, many researchers aimed to reveal the family theme in the novels because of the social importance of the family institution. Our work is one of these researches. In this study, the family structure in Turkish novels during 1971-1980 period was examined. Novels were read and tagged in the context of family, the obtained data was converted to be used statistically, then these statistics were compared with the actual numbers of the period and evaluations have been made on the basis of this. Yet, the changes of the family institution, social and moral corruptions, the factors damaging the family institution (cheat, divorce, abandon, illegitimate relationships etc.), kinds of marriages which are extensive and losing importance, role-models of family members, relations to each other and educational status, factors that shape the family structure (virilocal residence, polygamy, bride price, childlessness etc.), facts that provide the permanence of family structure etc. have been uncovered.
