Self-orientalism in Turkish novel (1870-1980)

In this study, in the light of the information compiled from 71 novels, written between the period of the beginning of Turkish novel to the 1980s and which have an important place in the Turkish literary world, the reflection of the phenomenon of "self-orientalism" in the Turkish novel is tried to be conveyed systematically. In the first part, the concept of orientalism, its historical and scientific development are explained, and also, Edward Said's book of the same name and the discussions around this book, in which he brings the fact that orientalism is a European-centered system of domination that was built on the relationship of knowledge & power, is given. Added to these, the emergence of orientalism in the world literature is explained in the light of certain examples. Moreover, the definition of the concept of self-orientalism, which manifested itself as a result of the influence of orientalism in non-Western societies, was made and after giving information about its historical development, the relationship between Turkish modernization and self-orientalism was revealed. Added to these, Turkish humanism and of Said's book Orientalism impact on Turkey, were studied again in this part, with the connection of modernization in Turkey. In the second part, which is the main part of the thesis, the manifestation of self-orientalism in the Turkish novel is discussed under these headlines: the development of the West and the backwardness of the East, self-orientalism as a derivative of westernization, authentic East and orientalism as imperialism's discourse of civilizing the East, Eastern as the other and the deceiver, transformation of lifestyle and mindset, Westernization of musical culture, view of religion, belittling one's own nationality, harem and lustful Eastern, Eastern woman, orientalist art and political colonialism. In the third part, the existence of self-orientalism in Turkish novelism has been summarized into 6 main chapters and the data on self-orientalism examined in each novel are stated as main items, thus, on which issues the self-orientalism is studied in each different period, is transferred collectively.
