Abstract (EN)

Censorship is the practice of editing or restricting content for specific political, religious or moral reasons. The existence of censorship can threaten the freedom of expression of ideas and hinder the power of art. Censorship in cinema can distort the essence of art by restricting creativity and the artist's expression. The aim of this study is to discuss the censorship in Turkish Cinema and Iranian Cinema from a political point of view. The function of the art of cinema, called the 7th Art, mirrors the society in a sense. This reflection is desired to be shaped by the political power according to the ideology of the period, and this restriction then progresses until the complete ban of the work. Although art is oppositional by its nature, its field is limited by the culture of obedience and it has to follow the path according to the country's policies. This culture and administration brings with it the phenomenon of censorship. Censorship varies depending on countries and freedom of expression, how the art of cinema is positioned and the political power of that period. In this research, the phenomenon of cinema and censorship, the history of Turkish and Iranian cinema will be examined, then the political reflection of the censorship in Turkish and Iranian Cinema will be analyzed with the similarities or divergences in the cinema of both countries. While the differences between Iranian Cinema before and after the "Iranian Islamic Revolution" will be examined, Turkish Cinema will be discussed in terms of the attitude it took during the periods of power changes and coups, including the Ottoman and Republican periods.
