A research regarding to determine social and economic changes emerging after privatization of tekel

By conducting this research, it's been tried to determine the social and economic changes of the tobacco growers whose livelihoods significantly depend on tobacco production carried out through a written-contract procedure and of the tobacco growers who switched to alternative crop production by abandoning tobacco production, after privatization of TEKEL. Besides, after initiation of the production of the leaf tobacco, which is named İzmir origin that is primarily grown in the Aegean province, in the city of Adiyaman, effects of the socio-economic characteristics of the growers, features of the establishments, their communication behaviours and the information sources they benefited are also discussed on the adoption behaviour of the production of this new tobacco origin. A survey was conducted with 134 tobacco growers, which were selected according to simple random sampling method, in the total 18 tobacco-grown villages/quarters of the six districts of Adiyaman, Manisa and Samsun cities where tobacco is intensively grown in order to find out these changes. Except the growers who were actively dealing with tobacco production, the survey was also conducted with the 142 growers who grew tobacco sometime ago but abandoned afterwards in the same villages/quarters, districts and cities. CHAID algorithm, an algorithm used for constructing Decision Trees which is one of the Data Mining methods, was used to determine the socio-economic changes of tobacco growers after privatization of TEKEL. The reasons of preferring this method are that dependent variable is nominal, categorical and independent variables are constant, categorical or nominal categorical. In this algorithm, dependent variable is defined as being a tobacco grower or not, independent variables are defined as personal characteristics, features of establishments and information resources. Various scenarios have been created according to outputs. It's been determined in the research area that 81,2% of the growers in the city of Adiyaman, 86,7% of the growers in the city of Manisa and 77,3% of the growers in the city of Samsun who abandoned tobacco production, discontinued growing tobacco after privatization of the TEKEL. The other important findings of the research are that tobacco growers in the cities of Manisa and Samsun have less and unsatisfying income comparing to growers who abandoned tobacco production, the number of tobacco growers registered to the national farmer registration system are less and they have less non-agricultural income comparing to the growers who abandoned tobacco production, tobacco growers are relatively older than the growers who abandoned tobacco production and need more external labor.
