Formulaic words in Turkish textbooks and student?s formulaic words level

In this thesis, formulaic words were investigated. Formulaic words are the cliche words that have become a tradition to use in certain circumtances. These words reflect the culture and the life of the society.Formulaic words are used at meals or after meals, in greetings, birth, death, while starting to a school or at marriage. Besides, It includes appreciating against to a favor or expressing a good wish, curses told in anger, oaths and promises. In order to gather accumulation on this topic, the frequency of formulaic words and transtion words were identified in Turkish course book of 5TH to 8TH grade students. The identified formulaic words are illustrated in the context for the first time. Beside the use of the sample, repetion of name value and page number have taken place. Formulaic words have been evaluated and classified acording to their functions and meanings. Classification has been done under the headings of prayers, curses and in the formulaic words used in social,cultural realtions. In order to determine the formulaic words usage knowledge of students in 8TH grade students, formulaic words pattern was applied and the results were analyzed. In addition, activities related to teaching formulaic words were applied by examinig Student Workbook of Turkish lesson. It appears that Turkish has a very rich and a wide variety of accumulation about formulaic words. However, in Turkish used in Turkey there may be some other formulaic words which don?t exist in this thesis. In the final part of the study, first, general conclusion was given about formulaic words. Then, suggestions have been given to the researchers. Unfortunately, in our country studies about formulaic words are really insufficient. So it is thought that this study will be guide for the later works on formulaic words and it will be a reference resource in Turkish used in Turkey.
