Turkish curriculum and teaching programme global warming and climate change in textbooks

Since the main cause of global warming and climate change is human-induced, individuals' knowledge, awareness, attitudes and behaviors on this issue are of great importance. The aim of this study is to determine how and in what way the concepts of climate change are included in the Turkish textbooks taught in the 2023-2024 academic year approved by the Ministry of National Education. The research is a qualitative study that aims to reveal the status of climate change issues in primary education programs and Turkish textbooks taught in primary education. In addition, Turkish textbooks and activity books prepared for gifted children within the scope of the support education room are also included in the scope of this study. The data of the study were obtained from the Turkish textbooks and the Turkish Curriculum approved by the Ministry of National Education for the 2023-2024 academic year. The related curricula and textbooks were analyzed using the content analysis technique. During the content analysis process, data directly or indirectly related to global warming and climate change were identified. Qualitative research techniques were used in the study and data were collected through document analysis method. The study aims to reveal the potential of educational materials to increase children's environmental awareness by evaluating how Turkish textbooks and activity books address the theme of climate change and how education on this subject is provided for gifted children in the support education room.
