Türkçe Dersinde Öğrencilerin Strateji Öğretimi ve Özdeğerlendirme Yoluyla Özetleme Becerilerinin Geliştirilmesi

The pimary aim of this study is to explore the contribution of the integration of summarizing strategies and self-evaluation reports on the development of students‟ summarizing skills in Turkish lesson. In light of this aim, the study also examines students‟ views related to the processes promoting their summarizing skills and their suggestions in relation to the problems encountered during these processes. The study, designed as an action reserach, was conducted with the 7th grade students in Turkish lesson at Van Erciş Atatürk secondary school during 2014-2015 fall semester for six weeks. Focus group interviews, self-evaluation reports and students‟ written documents were used as data collection instruments. While the qualitative data were subjected to content analysis, the students‟ documents were analysed quantitatively. Multiple findings revealed that while students‟ use of summarizing strategies and writing self-evaluation reports helped develop their summarizing skills in many aspects, they failed to promote their development in certain aspects. The findings exhibited that the students showed improvement in certain strategies like „finding main idea‟, „writing coherently‟, „avoiding repetitions‟, yet they failed to show sufficient progress in „taking out trivial expressions‟, „finding supporting ideas‟, and „using word phrases in writing‟. The participating students, towards the problems they encountered, made certain suggestions related to classroom conditions, teacher role and feedback, necessity of more practice and self-evaluation, and using time. In light of the findings, implications for practice and suggestions for further research were addressed.
