The examination of testing and evaluation competency of Turkish lesson teachers

In this study, it has been intended to obtain information about the testing and evaluation competency and attitudes of Turkish lesson teachers in a reliable and valid way and also reveal their knowledge and experience about testing and evaluation implementations based on those findings. The model of this research is "mixed research". Data collection tools of the research contain "Turkish Lesson Teachers Testing & Evaluation Attitude Scale", "Turkish Lesson Teachers Testing & Evaluation Competency Scale" and a form consisting of five questions to collect information about testing and evaluation implementations of Turkish lesson teachers. The target population of the research consists of 215 voluntary Turkish lesson teachers. The data collected by the scales have been analyzed by t-Test, ANOVA, Tukey tests and Pearson product-moment correlation analysis by using SPSS 26. The qualitative data have been collected by Google forms. These data have been analyzed and interpreted by content analysis. According to the quantitative findings, organizing in-service training courses will be useful for the teachers to improve their testing and evaluation competency. Another finding is that the teachers those having testing and evaluation course during their undergraduate education have a higher positive attitude towards testing and evaluation. It has been seen that the attitudes of the teachers rise when their testing and evaluation competency level increases. The qualitative findings show that teachers mostly test and evaluate within the curriculum and they use the recent and standard testing and evaluation techniques together. It has been found that there's a need of amelioration of the testing and evaluation processes. The research also points out that the teachers often prefer multiple-choice type of questions in their testing and evaluation. It has been suggested that National Ministry of Education should plan and conduct seminars to increase the competency levels and attitudes of Turkish lesson teachers towards testing and evaluation. It has also been suggested that testing and evaluation courses in faculties should be given in recent and standard testing and evaluation techniques in relation with MEB (National Ministry of Education) Turkish instruction program in an applied form.
