Turkish Language Teachers? Competencies in Special Field: A Case StudyKübra ŞENGÜLFırat UniversityInstitute of Educational SciencesDepartment of Turkish Language TeachingAugust 2012, Pages: XII + 162In this study a descriptive survey model is used in order to determine the Turkish language teachers? opinions regarding their competencies in the special field of Turkish Language Teaching. The study sample of the Turkey Statistical Institute (TSI) according to the classification introduced by statistical regional units from each of the 12 statistical regions in the province, a total of 12 provinces (İstanbul, Çanakkale, Aydın, Bursa, Ankara, Adana, Nevşehir, Zonguldak, Giresun, Kars, Elazığ, Şanlıurfa) is a Turkish teacher who served 579 in 2011-2012 educational year.A questionnaire that has been designed by the Ministry of Education is used as a tool for data collection. The questionnaire consists of 5 major competency areas 25 sub-competencies and 165 performance indicators in the special field of Turkish Language Teaching.As a result, ?Turkish Teacher? Competencies for Special Area? according to the on average ( = 3.22), Turkish teachers ?partially sufficient? to be determined. Turkish educational process planning and organizing an ?adequate? they ( = 3.74), students? language skills from an ?adequate? they ( = 3.44); students? language development, monitoring and evaluation, ?partially sufficient? they ( = 2.90); school, family and community cooperation in making ?partially sufficient? they ( = 3.13) in providing professional development in the field of Turkish ?partially sufficient? they ( = 2.91) were determined.Female teachers than male teachers, education faculty graduates compared to graduates in science and literature faculty, graduate degree graduates compared to graduates, teachers with 0-5 years experience compared to teachers with 6-10 years experience, TR1 Istanbul, TR2 West Marmara, Aegean TR3, TR5 Western Anatolia, Southeastern Anatolia regions TRB TRC teachers who work in East Anatolia and other regions than the teachers in the majority of the provinces and districts according to the teachers in the villages and towns other important findings of the research to be more competent than the teachers.Key Words: Teacher competences, special field competences, Turkish language teachers.
