Pronunciation disorders in Turkish songs

Speaking is a skill of self-expression. The effective use of this skill strengthens the ability to communicate between people. The most basic rule of effective communication is to pronounce the language correctly. Contrary to popular belief, Turkish is not a language that is read as it is written. This is the basis for mistakes in pronunciation. The mistakes we are exposed to at home, at school and outside are embedded in our language as if they are correct and we continue to use it as we hear it. Errors, especially in songs that are easy to memorize and that get stuck in the tongue, can cause permanent damage to our language. In this study, pronunciation disorders in the most listened Turkish pop songs in Turkey were analyzed. In this study, in which basic qualitative research, one of the qualitative research methods, was used, 30 pop songs, all sung by Turkish singers, were analyzed in terms of pronunciation disorders for one month. The object of the study is the playlist named "Turkish Pop 2024", which was the most listened to in 2024 on the most preferred music platform for listening to music in the world. This playlist consists of the most listened songs as determined by the users of the platform. Pronunciation disorders were identified as "skipping, slang and vulgar language use, unnecessary use of sounds and words, use of local dialect, slurring, errors in the use of vowels, incorrect use of consonants and wannabe singing" and codes were created. Data were analyzed through content analysis and descriptive analysis. The type and number of speech disorders identified and their proportion in total errors are given. As a result of the research, it was determined that there were pronunciation disorders in the songs analyzed. It was observed that the most common pronunciation disorder was f (67) 23,92% unnecessary use of sounds and words. These results are followed by f (59) 21,07% wannabe singing, f (49) 17,5% use of slang and vulgar language, f (47) 16,79% errors in the use of consonants, f (33) 11,79% omission, f (15) 5,36% strangulation, f (7) 2,5% use of local dialect and f (3) 1,07% errors in the use of vowels.
